Yukon Ho!

14 May

In my last posting, I mentioned that I’ve had things on my mind over the last few days.  Well, this is it: this summer I will be moving to Whitehorse, capital of the Yukon Territory.

I was offered and accepted the "Information Analyst" job on Monday, but the reality is only just starting to sink in now that we’re spreading the word.  We didn’t tell everyone right away, because there were a few people we felt should hear the information from us, but news spreads like wildfire in a community of 600.  So Tuesday and Wednesday we quietly told our close friends, clients, and colleagues.  And now the news can spread as it will.

I am feeling a great sadness to be leaving Fort Liard. We have had so much freedom here, met such wonderful people, had adventures that one never has in the city. We’ve enjoyed having tourists stop in for lunch. We’ve loved having kids come by to visit us every other day, whether to play our piano, read our books, or just romp with our pets. We’ve had so much fun learning to make birchbark baskets, birch syrup, rosehip jam, high-bush cranberry jelly, dry fish, dry moosemeat, and more. I can hardly believe, after all the trials and tribulations, how dear this little place has become to me!

Our friends Ken and Dianne did a wonderful job of selling me on the idea of moving, as I was suffering a bit of "buyer’s remorse".  I’m excited about the possibilities, though.  And I’m so glad the movers are going to be packing our stuff!

For you Calvin & Hobbes fans, here’s the much-loved "Yukon Song" from which I take the title of my post.
