Stop and Smell the Roses

16 May

In the spirit of making the most of the time I have left in Fort Liard, I did NOT spend my weekend cleaning the house, as I had intended to do.

Our friend Shannon, from Ottawa, is coming for a 3-week visit starting this Wednesday, and the house (especially the guest room) is in a rather dismal state.  But it was so absolutely and perfectly gorgeous on Saturday, I refused to spend it indoors, scrubbing the floor.  Instead, I set up our wonderful Mayan hammock (from Lee Valley) in the backyard, and read a new book from cover to cover.  I think I ended up spending five or six hours out there.  I even got a light tan in the process.  (Oops!  Not supposed to do that.)  I was joined by 9-year-old Dominique for about half an hour, and at her request, I taught her how to whistle on a blade of grass.

Yesterday I managed to clean out the fridge, which made me realize I had an extra brick of cream cheese that needed to be used.  So I made a cheesecake, which I brought with me to dinner at Mike and Melanie’s house.  I had a great visit with them and then cleaned up the guest room when I came home.  Now I have only the kitchen, living room, bathroom, halls, and basement to worry about . . . !

I wish the house could stay magically clean, but really, instead of a lemon-fresh house I would rather have the memory of the sun on my skin, the songs of the birds, and the wind in my hair on a perfect spring day.
