Sexism or Sensitivity?

12 Jul
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like people are still making the assumption that the man of the house has to be the main breadwinner.
A few weeks ago, I called Yukon Electrical to set up an account so that I would actually have power at my new house when I move in.  Everything went fine, and they asked me to please call them with a daytime contact number as soon as I knew what it was.  Today, I called in to give them that information.  The person I talked to said, "Great.  Okay, so I assume it’s Mike who works for YTG?"  (That’s the local abbreviation for the Yukon Territorial Government.)  Why, when I had called in the account, and when I was now calling in with a work number, would she assume it’s my husband’s job?
A contractor who works near me at my office did something similar.  He’s a nice guy, very gregarious, and I couldn’t believe the gaffe he made (in my opinion) when he essentially implied that we had moved here because Michael had found a job in Whitehorse.  I was actually sitting at my new desk at the time (hello?  I’m obviously employed here?!) so this comment totally floored me.
Would YOU assume it was the husband who gets the job that leads to a big move?  In this day and age?

Hehehe…. funny that. Kinda sad, but funny. On the other hand, I seem to recall Michael calling down for room service the night after you guys got married to be greeted by a cheery "Hello, Mr. Fritzen!"

When I was in the boat coming back from Nahanni Butte yesterday, I commented that I was moving to Whitehorse because my wife got a job there. At the end of the trip, one of the tourists in the boat said, "Good luck with your new job" I said, "I don\’t have one yet. My WIFE has the job." "Oh!" he replied, "I assumed it was YOU who had the job." I mean, what\’s up with that! I even told them Fawn had the job! Sheesh.
