24 Weeks Pregnant

13 Oct
"Your baby’s growing steadily, gaining about a quarter of a pound since last week, when she was just over a pound. Since she’s almost a foot long, that makes a pretty lean figure, but her body is filling out proportionally and she’ll soon put on more baby fat. Your baby’s skin is thin, translucent, and wrinkled, her brain is growing rapidly, and her taste buds are developing. Her lungs are developing "branches" of the respiratory "tree" and cells that produce surfactant, a substance that helps the air sacs inflate easily."

"Although your baby is still receiving oxygen through the placenta, once birth occurs his or her lungs will start taking in oxygen on their own. In preparation for the outside world, your baby’s lungs will now begin to produce surfactant. Surfactant is a substance that keeps the air sacs in our lungs from collapsing and sticking together when we exhale, allowing us to breathe properly.

Because the inner ear is now completely developed, your baby may be able to tell when he or she is upside down or right side up while floating and making movements in the amniotic fluid. The inner ear controls balance in the body."
