Anterior Placenta

17 Oct
We had another doctor’s appointment today and I found out that I might have a good reason for being "insenstive" to the baby’s movements.  The ultrasound results were in, and everything was fine.  The tech noted that I have an "anterior placenta".  The placenta is the organ that passes nutrients from mommy to baby and that passes out waste.  It develops at the site where the egg implants.  This usually happens on the "back wall" of the uterus, near the mother’s spine.  In my case, the placenta has developed on the "front wall" or basically around my belly button.  Although my doctor said that it’s not officially "on the books", I’ve often read that having an anterior placenta can delay the detection of fetal movement, basically because the placenta acts as a cushion between the baby and the rest of mom.  I’ve also read that having this might help keep my belly button from popping out — but we’ll see about that one!
The baby was kicking like crazy during my exam — I’ve never felt such strong movement before.  Apparently s/he doesn’t like being poked with the Doppler because I kept getting kicks right where the doctor had the wand on my belly.  Michael, who hasn’t had that chance to feel any movement yet, could actually see my belly jerking from the kicks!  The doctor was finally able to get away from all the kicking and determined that the baby’s heart rate was 163 bpm.  (As a note about the fetal movement, she wrote "FM++" on my chart, haha!)
Apparently my uterus is measuring a bit on the small side, which it has been since the beginning.  No one’s told me to worry yet, so I’m not.  I gained 8 lbs. since my last appointment (now at 169.5 lbs, for a total of 16.5 lbs.) so that’s bit more than the recommended 1 lb per week.  It must be all that Thanksgiving food.  However, the doctor wasn’t at all concerned; she said it’s a good rate of weight gain.  Gotta love the doctor-approved weight gain!
