Letting the Cat out of the Bag

25 Oct
Last night I was cleaning up the kitchen after making fried rice when I heard a plaintive, "Mew".  Most people who own pets can tell you that they can discern the different things their pets are trying to say, and this was definitely an "I’m stuck somewhere and can’t get out" kind of mew.

I looked in our bedroom, in the coat closet, even in the front room (maybe it was really a "longing to be outside mew"), but I couldn’t even tell the direction of the occasional mew.  I stood still and listened.  "Mew."  Ah, it’s coming from down the hall.  I moved down the hall and listened again.  "Mew."  Nope, more like from the basement.  But Michael is down there and can’t hear him.  We played this sort of "hot and cold" game until I figured out the complaints were emanting from one of the kitchen drawers!

I pulled open the drawer (in which I usually keep freezer containers, but is practically empty right now because all the containers are full of food and in the freezer), and there was a rather bedraggled-looking Crook.  He looked startled for a moment, and then leaped out of the drawer, shaking himself.  He continued mewing for several minutes, perhaps out of relief.

All I can do is shake my head at Crook’s crooked ways; he gets away with the worst behaviour because it is just so outrageously funny.
