Birthday Weekend

20 Nov
Yesterday was my 27th birthday.  It was a great day and I hardly even thought about how much closer 27 seems to 30 than 26 did!  Although Michael and I spent much of the day cleaning and getting ready for the party we had in the evening, it wasn’t entirely exhausting.  We got some down-time in walking Nanuq during the beautifully sunny afternoon; the woods were enchanting, with the branches glistening in ice where the chinook of a few days ago melted their snow covering and allowed the water to refreeze so that every bush appears to be covered in silver glitter.  I also got to spend some time reading my new book ("Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" by Tracy Hogg) in between spates of cleaning and organizing.

Our house has never been so clean or organized!  For one thing, that vacuum cleaner I ordered from eBay finally arrived on Friday, so we didn’t have to go begging for one.  Also, we got all the boxes out of the living room, so it looks much more civilized than before.  Although I wouldn’t describe organizing and cleaning as the ideal way to spend a day, I felt great about our productivity, and so it was very satisfying.

The party itself was lots of fun.  People started showing up around 6:30 and there was tons of great food.  (I just love a real potluck!)  Even though I’d told people not to bring gifts, I got quite a few, anyway, so I was utterly spoiled.  Around 8:00 or so, I fired up the electric piano and we got people singing and rattling and banging spoons and generally kicking up a ruckus.  I was glad that all the neighbours were at our house, or else I’m sure they would have taken exception to the noise!  The last guests left around midnight, so it wasn’t too wild, and I even had enough energy to clean everything up (paper plates are a godsend) and turn on the dishwasher so that I got to enjoy the clean house again this morning when I got up.

Today was a day of enforced rest.  I took it easy in the morning and attended a craft show with Maria in the afternoon.  I intended to come home and finish up the contract work I’ve been doing, but found upon me arrival that Michael had gone out to do some errands.  Although I had expected him to be out, I discovered that in my haste to leave the house with Maria, I had neglected to take my keys with me!  And so I headed to Tom and Tammy’s (across the street) for refuge.  Michael ended up not coming back until around 6:45 (having gone to watch a football game with some other guys) and joined us for supper at Tom and Tammy’s house.  We’re so lucky to have such great neighbours!

So now I’m putting the finishing touches on my work, and then it will be time to head up to bed.  Sometimes the best things that happen are the ones you don’t plan at all.
