Rainbows and silver linings

30 Nov
And I must make one more posting to say that even a jinxed day like yesterday can have its bright moments.

Right after work, I had a few errands to do before heading home.  I wanted to find an item to send to my niece Alexandria for Christmas, get a few groceries, and find the springform pans for those Christmas cakes.  There was one store in particular where I thought I could find the gift I was looking for, and instead of walking there and back to work, I decided to simply drive, as I had to continue in that direction anyway.  Wonder of wonders, there was a parking spot — on Main Street! — right in front of the store I was headed for.  Not only that, but there were still 8 minutes left on the parking meter.  I decided to take a chance, went into the store, found exactly what I wanted, and was able to purchase it and get back to the car with 3 minutes still left on the meter.

At the grocery store, I didn’t find all the ingredients I wanted, but I did find an abandoned shopping cart in the parking lot.  That’s a bonus because you have to pay a loonie to get a cart at most of the stores around here.  How often do you park somewhere and actually make a buck?

So it was a mixed-blessing kind of a day…like life itself, I suppose.  Now the trick is that I can choose to dwell on the bad parts or focus on the good ones.  And, you know, I really am thrilled about that parking meter!

That reminds me of this spring when I needed to renew my health card and driver\’s licence. In downtown St. Catharines. Where parking stinks. Not only did I find a spot in front of the building I needed to go to, it still had a half hour on it. Not only that, but there was no line. I was in and out in ten minutes. Finding a paid parking meter IS thrilling.

This morning I wanted to stop at the bank before work and the parking meter I ended up at said "FAIL" on it. (I hope that wasn\’t a comment on my parking job.) I think one can get ticketed for parking at a bad meter, but I risked it and ran into the bank, anyway. Not as good as a paid parking meter, but at least I didn\’t have to waste a quarter for 30 minutes of parking when I needed only 2!

A QUARTER GETS YOU 30 MINUTES OF PARKING!?!?!?!Damn.It\’s $1.20 for half an hour on campus. I think it\’s at least a dollar most places. Enjoy it while it lasts!
