Fawn 1, Fear 0

8 Dec
I’m briefly ignoring my course instructor to make a quick update to the blog.  (She’s just demonstrating a different version of SAS, so I’m not missing anything important to my job.)
Today I screwed my courage to its sticking place and went to the "Centre de la francophonie" at lunchtime.  They were holding a "Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies" session, a national program that in French is much more inclusive, as it’s called "Mamans, papas et bébés en santé".  I thought it would be a good opportunity to go meet some francophone parents so that I can keep up my French after I go on maternity leave.
I usually hate going into a group of people who all know each other and trying to make conversation, and it’s even more difficult in French, as I’m not as confident in my communication skills.  So I had to psych myself up and remind myself that it’s good to step out of one’s comfort zone.  And it was great!  The free lunch was delicious, the folks were friendly (I even ran into a few people I had already met before, much to my surprise), and I really had a good time.  It was too bad I had to leave right at 1:00 to get back to my course, because they were about to hold a workshop on baby signing (doing sign language with your baby before s/he is able to speak) which I am fascinated with.
The next session will be on January 5th; as soon as I get to the office tomorrow, I’ll be adding that date to my calendar.

Where exactly is the "sticking place" I wonder… No matter – congrats on stepping out of your comfort zone. It\’s like taking a polar bear swim… Shocking, but then you get used to it! 😀
