Sugar, here I come!

22 Dec
I was at the doctor’s again this morning and I’m happy to report that everything is back to normal.  Well, I did have one surprise: when I stepped on the scale, I weighed in at 176.5 lbs, which is a drop of 1.5 lbs since last week!  I guess cutting out all sugar has a pretty big impact on one’s diet, even though I don’t think I am that much of a sugar fiend.  It’s amazing, though, the amount of sugar to be found in prepared foods such as "healthy" cereals and even deli meats.  The doctor said I’m allowed to have a cookie now and then, but of course I should still watch my sugar intake.

The doctor seemed to have some trouble finding the baby’s heartbeat today, but she didn’t seem concerned about it, and it was a good rate (154 bpm), so I guess that must be normal.

After I got back from the doctor’s, I had a bite of lunch and then headed off to the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre to check out their "Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies" program.  It’s part of the Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program from Health Canada, and they have a drop-in every Thursday for pregnant women (and their partners) and families with babies up to 6 months old.  I’ve been meaning to go for months, but kept forgetting about it.  At my doctor’s appointment this morning, I bumped into Janet, who was in our prenatal class, and she mentioned that she wanted to check it out, so I finally had a reminder on the day one was happening to actually spur me to action.

There were about 15 or 20 moms there, some quite pregnant and some with babies, and a few dads, too.  There was food, also, which I nibbled on a bit, even though I’d already eaten lunch.  (I had a cranberry pecan tart that was heaven after a week without sugar!)  It was fun to meet some new and expecting moms, and I’ll definitely be back for the next one.  Between the English and French program, I shouldn’t get too socially isolated after the baby arrives!
