Shiny new machines

25 Jan
Yesterday I had to leave work early to go home and meet the guys from The Brick who were delivering our Brand New Washer and Dryer.  Our old washer worked okay, but the dryer took 90 minutes to dry most loads (and could only be set for 45 minutes at a time) and required a piece of duct tape or object wedged in front of the door in order to keep it from opening, thus stopping the drying operation.  All this was clearly not going to work well with the arrival of the baby, which I hear always means doing laundry every day, or with our plan to use cloth diapers.

Michael and I were able to pick up the new Washer and Dryer (yes, I know I capitalized them) at a Boxing Day sale.  This was great because we thought we’d have to spend over $2,000 on new machines or use up the Aeroplan points Michael’s dad gave us as gifts (for Michael’s grad and then for our wedding).  The Aeroplan points work out to about 6 round-trip short-haul flights or at least a couple of long-distance flights, so it would be really sad to give them up, but we figured we needed a new set more than we were likely to travel in the next few years.

Since we were able to get the {angel choirs singing} Washer and Dryer for $1,200, we got a much better deal than we would have expected.  It’s still a lot of money, but we should be saving on our power bill (the
Washer is an EnergyStar appliance), we won’t be worrying about having to suddenly replace the dryer, and doing laundry won’t be as much of a chore.  In fact, it might be entertaining – don’t you love to watch your Front-Loading Washing Machine do its work?!

OK, I\’m TOTALLY with you on this one. I\’ve been begging Craig for MONTHS to get me a new Duet washer/dryer set with the pedestals. We have the similar problems with the dryer taking forever. I, however, have not been sucessful in getting him to give in and let me buy them. Congratulations!

Does this mean you\’re keeping the points, or is it time for us to send a cheque? And by the way, if you can find unscented "he" detergent, let me know, because I haven\’t found any yet.

Yeah, I was wondering about the detergent.  So far I\’ve been using my "Seventh Generation" powder detergent, and it seems to be working just fine – no residue in the clothes.  I also tried a sample of the Tide "h.e." detergent that came with the washer, and it definitely has a smell, but it reminds me of my Oma\’s house, so I actually enjoyed it!

Thanks for the congrats, Cat – I do feel blessed. 😉  I wish you the best of luck with your quest for a new washer and dryer!  Go easy on your hubby, though – after all, an accountant-type who\’s just bought a dining set, two dogs, and various home renovations can only bend so far, right?
