Jade’s First Halloween

31 Oct
Today was Jade’s first Halloween.  Halloween wasn’t a big deal when I was growing up.  It wasn’t something that either of my parents grew up with and my sister and I weren’t even allowed to go trick-or-treating until my godparents took us for the first time when I was 9.  I didn’t really miss it because I didn’t really know what I was missing, but now I find it such a fun holiday.  It happens to also be Michael’s favourite holiday, although we don’t get enough kids at our door for his taste.  Lots of the neighbourhood kids are older and go off to the bigger neighbourhoods where the loot is better.

Anyway, we happened to have a costume for Jade because Marusia bought it for her dog Jasper, but it didn’t fit his big manly chest.  So we got it and it’s quite large on Jade, but it still worked.  She makes a pretty cute ladybug.

I dressed her up for a potluck party at my office.  I figured since she’s too young to go trick-or-treating, it was a good way to get some use out of the costume.  The party was fun although only one gal from my branch was there.  I didn’t stick around for the prizes at the end, but I’m sure Jade had the "Cutest Costume", although her eligibility is a bit dubious, since she doesn’t actually work at the Public Service Commission.  I had thought about dressing in green and sticking petals around my face to be a flower to go with Jade, but I couldn’t think of an easy way to make the petals so I chickened out and didn’t dress up at all.

Late in the afternoon, Michael decided we should take Jade around to the neighbours to show her off.  He wanted to know if we had a net of some kind so that he could be a bug-catcher.  We didn’t have a net, but I told him about my flower idea.  He immediately set to work becoming a flower.  He pasted a bunch of petals around the brim of his Indiana Jones hat (Sorry, Michael.  How else could I describe the hat?) and put a yellow circle on top and, voila!  Instant flower.  I had been stuck on the idea of having petals around my face and never thought about having them go ’round my head, instead.

Jade was a big hit with the neighbours and everyone gave us treats even though we said we didn’t need any.  It seems like cheating, doesn’t it, when they know Jade is too young to be eating candy and it’s going to be us eating it?  Tom and Tammy even fed us hotdogs in which the wieners were carved up to look like severed fingers.  I couldn’t believe Tammy had a themed dinner for Halloween — now I feel like I have so much to live up to!

We got home just in time to greet the first trick-or-treaters of the evening.  A pretty good first Halloween.  (Pictures will be posted soon.)

Take a largish piece of 1/4 inch foam. Dye or colour as desired. Cut out a flower shape with a hole in the centre for your face. Wear green clothes, and have green socks strategically pinned down your body for leaves. Well… maybe next year. And if not, I\’ll have to borrow that ladybug costume for when *I* have kids. 🙂

Now all I can think of is Michael and his raven costume, oh so long ago…

The problem wasn\’t that I couldn\’t think of a way to do the petals, but rather that I couldnt think of a QUICK way to do it with materials we had on hand.  Tee hee hee.  Of course, who DOESN\’T have 1/4 inch foam lying around?
