The teeth are in!

Or should that be "out"?

I would like to make a posting about the rest of my trip to Vancouver, about my great dinner date with Beanie, about my tour of Granville Island with my godparents, about a couple of delicious Chinese meals, about how it feels as though I’ve been gone far longer than four days, and yet it feels like I never left… but it’s late now and there’s only time for a short entry before I need to sink into bed.

And so I will mention the most momentous news only, and save the rest for later.  And so: at the ripe old age of 14.5 months, Jade finally has teeth!  In the plural, no less.

Jade woke up at 6:30 this morning, happy as a lark, chirping like a cricket in her crib.  I was amazed when I saw the numbers on the clock, as Norris had told me that Michael had put her to bet an hour early (at 6 p.m.) and I had therefore been expecting an early wake-up call.  Jade cried a little when she saw me come into her room, but we quickly settled back into bed, where she nursed sporadically for about 20 minutes.  She kept stopping to look me in the face and to pat me, as if amazed I was there.  With each smile, I could see, peeping out barely above her gums, the edge of two teeth, one on the bottom and one on the top.  At first I thought Michael had failed to tell me about the teeth, or that he had somehow not noticed (which didn’t seem like him), but when I asked him about it tonight (he’s in Vancouver now, by the way) he said that there was still the thinnest layer of gum over the teeth yesterday.

So it seems Jade was trying to let us both witness her first teeth at the same time.  And what more can you ask for in a daughter than that?
