Riverside Grocery ROCKS! and other Whitehorse shopping pleasures

17 Jul
I just came out of a grocery store and I’m PUMPED!  As you can imagine, that is not my usual feeling upon departure from a grocery store.
Babysitting on Sunday night went well.  Michael and I really enjoyed Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix and we came home to find that not only was the house still standing, but Jade was sleeping peacefully.  Apparently, she hadn’t wanted to go to bed, so Jennifer just cuddled with her on the couch until she fell asleep around 7:30-ish.  No fuss, no muss.  I can pretty much guarantee that Jade wouldn’t have fallen asleep like that if it had been me with her on the couch.  I think Jade will be very happy to Jennifer again next time around!
Anyway, I mention this here because Jennifer left a couple of bracelets at our house (Jade had been playing with them).  Since I know that she works at the the Riverside Grocery, which happens to be half a block from my office, I brought them to work with me, thinking that I would wander over there during coffee break time.
Since I seem to be hungry today and had already eaten all my snacks, I wandered around the store to see if I could find anything with which to stock my desk against future hunger pangs.  I had only ever been in the Riverside Grocery once and that was only at the front, where the chips and pops are stocked.  This was my first foray into the recesses of the wedge-shaped building, and there are some fascinating treasures to be discovered.
My most exciting discovery was their baking/kitchen implements section.  They have CAKE BOARDS!  And MERINGUE POWDER!  And FONDANT ICING!  Oh my!  I could become a cake-baking goddess with all the toys they have in there!  I have to admit that I succumbed to the siren call of an icing spatula, a really cool "smart scoop" ice cream scoop, and some "bake-even cake strips" that promise "there’s no need to level cake tops when you wrap pans with these convenient strips".  (That last item might be snake oil, but I figured it was worth a try.  Slicing cake tops to try to make them flat REALLY sucks.)  Anyway, visions of future cakes are dancing in my head.  Now I’m REALLY looking forward to that "Meet the TWINS!" party in a few months.
Shopping in Whitehorse can be a bit of a treasure hunt, but it’s amazing what you can find.  For example, I’ve been looking for jewellery-making supplies recently, and was pleasantly surprised at what I could find here.  I am totally spoiled because in Ottawa there were a couple of stores completely dedicated to beading and jewellery-making.  But I was actually able to find some nice beads in various locations around town, as well as the jump rings, lobster claw closures, crimping beads, and other jewellery-making necessities at the Indian Craft Store.
So if it’s shopping that’s keeping you from moving to Whitehorse, put your fears to rest.  You might have to look a little harder, but often when ye seek, ye shall find.

I\’m sure you can find many things in Whitehorse, but Charmaine will still be disappointed with the shoe selection here. NYC is still the place to be to shop for clothes and shoes.

I hate cutting the tops off of cakes, too. Although I don\’t like icing, so the tops are normally the only part that I eat (if I do). Once, I was baking and left the room and when I came back, there was Gloucester, up on the counter, merrily chowing down on the cake tops…

Let me know how the cake strips work….I\’ve often wondered.

Beanie, I\’m with you on the icing.  If only there were a way to make it less sweet!  But it\’s pretty hard to decorate a cake without it.  Sometimes I used whipped cream, but it doesn\’t hold it\’s shape for doing anything fancy.
