Office supply toys

3 Dec

Once upon a time, I ran a bookkeeping business.  In order to do my important bookkeeping work, I got a fancy and important-looking adding machine (which is basically just a financial calculator that can print).  Since we were living in a tiny community with only two stores (three, if you counted the gas station) I also stocked up on important business supplies like the rolls of paper the adding machine prints on.  I still have about 20 rolls of the stuff.

Today Jade broke into the supply cupboard and stole the one roll that was partially-used.  Let me tell you, it’s one of the most entertaining toys.  EVER.  We played with it for almost half an hour, which in toddler time is like a decade.  We unrolled it and let it roll up by itself again.  We drew on it.  We pulled the middle out to turn it into a “stick”.  We could have gone on for longer, but something else came along to distract her from the game.

I’m just throwing this idea out there for the other past-bookkeepers out there who are looking to entertain their kids.

And, oh yeah, the adding machine itself is a darned good piece of entertainment, too.

The end.

Bwahahahah! You should turn this into a “Thrifty Christmas” series of suggestions about how to repurpose old tech equipment to entertain the toddler set: FREE presents, only wrapping required. Think how much fun a cast-off electric toothbrush could be? Painting…massaging the dog…it’s endless really…

That’s one of the funniest thing about parenting; you can buy the most expensive, best educational, and hottest toy from all the mom magazines, but in the end they will still be more entertained by the cardboard roll from the paper towels.

Unfortunately, the same thing applies to cats. Like the other day, when I got home from work and found that Glossy had pulled some Kleenex from out of the box… And then happily shredded it.

My FF gets amused with the simplest things. I think it is generally more the company that helps turn an ordinary thing into a special toy.
Sure, looking after kids is a labour but I really believe that it’s a labour of love and the way that simple things like an empty bottle can be a plaything just makes me love them more and glad to be a mum. You can really see their eyes sparkle.
I just have to keep an eye on my FF with the toilet paper roll as he is inclined to eat it when he thinks I’m not looking.
