The day of reckoning

6 Jan

The day, it has come.  Since we moved to Whitehorse almost five years ago, there have been signs at the airport, telling you to pay for parking.  But even if you really, really wanted to pay for parking, there was nowhere and no one to pay.

I just dropped my dad off at the airport (hello, windshield ice scraper at 5:30 in the morning!) and thought I’d actually park instead of stopping in front of the terminal.  And lo! there was a barrier, a meter with tickets, and everything.

Whitehorse must really count as a big city now.

(But don’t fret, Whitehorsians.   In true Whitehorse style, the first 60 minutes of parking are free and the daily rate for parking is a mere $1.50.  I wish I had seen the rates before I backed the hell out of there and parked in front of the terminal.(  Because I’d forgotten to bring my purse with me.)  I wonder how long it took for the barrier to come back down?)

Now that they’ve started collecting parking fees, beware!! You’ll probably lose the privilege of the first 60-min parking next, then they’ll start jacking up the parking fees.

Parking fees in Ottawa is ridiculous!

On the same note, I guess Ottawa will be joining her big bad sister cities like Toronto and Vancouver and get our full body scanner at the airport. I didn’t even think Ottawa was in the same league!

Our airport has a spankin’-new non-human money taker as you exit. It doesn’t like the cold.

The only place in Canada I’ve ever been and had to park was Niagra Falls and that was 12 years ago. I’m pretty sure it was over $10, maybe closer to $20! and that was no matter how long you were there.
We have to pay to park at Cleveland Clinic and a full day is like $12 We usually run more like $4.50-$6, but I hate it. I’d actually rather pay $12 for valet parking and not have to circle the stupid garage until I got 7 floors up and hit daylight!

Like Megan, our airport has had nothing but trouble with their system and they charge for every second you are there 😦 Of course the super duper long term parking is still wide open so you can hide in there for free whilst running inside to grab someone 🙂

Whewwwww, from the headline I thought they ticketed you after all for exceeding 5 minutes free parking in front of the terminal building
